Analysing your body's composition of fat, lean weight and water levels, together with measuring your metabolic rate is a more significant indicator of health than simply weighing yourself. Body Analysis is an excellent means of monitoring changes of the body composition of a particular individual over a period of time and a greater motivational tool in achieving a leaner healthier body. This is highly recommended aid to a healthier lifestyle and diet free weight loss.
Fat weight, not total weight determines health risk, i.e. a body builder might measure 'Obese' on the BMI scales but be shown to have a good ratio of lean weight to fat weight when his body composition is measured and be within the established recommended limits for health purposes.

EATING DISORDERS.
You may have an eating disorder if you:-
a) feel guilty about the food you've just eaten, or
b) are always trying to lose weight but 'fail', or
c) constantly think about food, or
d) feel out of control around certain foods, or
e) overeat secretly, or
f) purge or use laxatives to expel consumed food, or
g) feel fat although your BMI is normal, or
h) genuinely fear weight gain or
i) measure your self worth by your weight and eat/not eat accordingly, or
j) eat to eliminate hurt, loneliness, pain, sorrow, heart ache etc.
ANOREXIA - can be fatal for about 10% of those who have been anorexic for a long time and usually due to heart failure suicide or lack of resistance to illness. However the earlier treatment is sought, the better the outcome. The best therapies are those that treat the whole individual and their variety of needs. Part of this process is counselling which will include work on self esteem, reaching the real self and dealing with feelings and behaviours directly related to fear of fatness and fear of being a normal body weight. Telephone counselling is not recommended for this issue.
BULIMIA - Here a person quite often purges after meals or after bingeing in private, especially having consumed 'forbidden' fattening foods. Trying to get rid of these unwanted calories, some bulimic people also take laxatives, indulge in excessive exercise and/or starve themselves for a while. Vomiting can cause damage to the salivary glands, erosion of the teeth, severe bleeding of the oesophagus, disorders of the stomach, including rupture. Although laxatives are ineffective in reducing calories absorption, they are sometimes still used to expel the 'forbidden' foods. Laxative abuse can badly damage the bowel lining affecting its normal functioning. Constipation, diarrhoea and bloating can also become long term problems. Many bulimic people suffer self doubt, feel inadequate even whilst holding down good careers. Counselling can help deal with this person's hatred of her/himself, of her/his perceived lack of will power and self control. Those with Bulimia normally respond well to personal development counselling work. Through counselling they learn how to listen to their 'real' selves rather than the 'shoulds', 'musts' and 'oughts' of others. This self awareness then enables them to deal with their bulimia.
OBESITY
The fuller figure can be more attractive to some but it comes with its own risks. If a person is more than two stone overweight she/he increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, cancer and early death etc. A person may not be overweight by choice but maybe, for example, overweight because of emotional eating. In these cases, eating foods high in sugar, or simple carbs can be mood altering and can ease the pain and anguish ladled out in our day to day living. Counselling can ascertain if a person is ready to reduce her/his weight to a more healthy level and then can assist with her/his confidence issues and can build problem solving and interpersonal skills for her/him. I then look at each person's relationship with food and look at small positive changes that could be made in each case. I look at changing the lifestyle that has supported the 'overweightness' to a lifestyle that suits the individual, is enjoyable, attainable, without dieting but with understanding.
Alternatively the body composition checks and life coaching, (detailed above), has proved to be very successful in enabling clients to begin their road to permenant weight loss. It is the lean mass in our bodies that burns the calories. Fat is a major health risk to the heart and heart disease is the biggest killer in the western world. So find out how balanced your body is at present and how it could work better for you in future and give you a better life.
